Last week was a little crazy - an immediate family member ended up in the ER and ICU for 5 days. They are home now, but that is why I missed sending out last week’s email. Great conversations, audience questions, and building the network of people who are going to change Iowa.</li><li>Community Homeless Convo (4/23) - attended a local meeting to help meet the needs of people experiencing homelessness. Lots of work to be done. Big takeaway: we need more resources to support people who are suffering. Once in office, fighting for people over profit will directly impact these issues - creating affordable housing, lowering grocery costs, funding higher education, and social services to help get people back on their feet.</li><li>Meeting with Scale to Win - Met with this vendor that supports connecting with disenfranchised voters and small dollar donors.</li><li>Started Soccer Coaching (4/30) - serving the community as 2-3 year old soccer coach. Focusing on fun, motor skills, and building kids’ confidence! What we didOn 6/19, we attended Havenpalooza - great food trucks, music, and an amazing cause.&nbsp;6/20 was packed: with attending the Juneteenth celebration in the morning, after meeting and being invited by local celebrity, Charlene Washington, featured on Iowa’s tallest mural (the silo in town!). I learned a lot about local history and ways the Pleasant Valley neighborhood specifically is still disenfranchised today. That afternoon was our ice cream social, where nearly a dozen neighbors happened to walk by and happily grabbed a scoop.On 6/24, we attended - Cancer in Iowa: 99 Counties Project – Webster County Presentation - learning more on our current cancer crisis, personal choices that reduce risk, and the more powerful focus we need at the legislative level to pass basic protections and make healthcare more affordable.&nbsp;On 6/25, the first Webster County Democrat Meeting in the new offices.&nbsp;On 6/27, we were at PRIDEFEST! From 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, we had a booth, met community members, had great conversations, and helped several people register to vote for the first time.&nbsp;The Issues – Money Out of PoliticsThis week, one of the biggest issues I heard, regardless of party, is politicians selling us out. From the national to the state level, among Republicans and Democrats alike, we can often find the reason they sponsored a bill or voted a certain way by checking their top donors.&nbsp;Statistics show that members of Congress spend 30-70% of their time fundraising, and that 91% of the time, the candidate with the most money wins. With Citizens United, this issue ballooned, where corporations now play a bigger hand in elections. Until we remove the ability to buy elections, we are stuck paying for it.&nbsp;The problemIowa is one of nine states with no limits on contributions to state-level political candidates. While some technicalities exist - like prohibiting direct checks from Walmart, there are no limits from the Walmart PAC, we can see through the nonsense. At the federal level, the oligarchy has to find loopholes like Super PACs. In Iowa, they wear the corruption on their sleeve like a badge of honor.&nbsp;I see this issue as one of, if not the biggest issue. Private school vouchers? Check the $10,000-per-cycle from the former head of a local private school. Water quality? Follow the agribusiness donations. Data centers? Check who’s being bankrolled by the tech giants.&nbsp;If we want more affordable policies passed, basic rights protected, and people-centered politics, we need to get money out of politics.&nbsp;The solutionPublicly funded elections - not only would we accomplish getting big money out of politics, but we could also remove the trap altogether, allowing more everyday people to bring their best ideas to Des Moines.&nbsp;Given the hurdle of passing that, more immediate solutions exist. Robert Reich wrote an article showing how, at the state level, we could effectively cut corporations off from even interfering in our elections. By passing a bill that strips them of political spending, we can take significant power out of oligarchs' hands, as well as impose basic caps on individual contributions.&nbsp;You would be shocked to see some of your favorite Iowa politicians - yes, both parties - taking corruptible sums. But not me. That's why you’ll see your new favorite candidate knocking on the doors himself, not giving consultant canned responses to the issues that matter most.Let’s build a place where people don’t have to babysit their legislators and their campaign finance accounts. What we didWe protested 6 AI data centers in Palo, Iowa, on 6/1. We won the Democratic Primary on 6/2 – officially the first nominee in 8 years. We met with and were endorsed by Senator Daryl Beall (retired). We marched in the Frontier Days Parade with the county party and other local candidates on 6/6, and also attended Frontier Days down at the Fort.The Issues – water qualityThis week, the most common concern I heard was about water quality, and it's one of the main reasons I’m running. The EPA suggests a nitrate threshold of 10 parts per million (ppm) or less. However, studies show even 5 ppm is linked to higher cancer risks, especially blood-related cancers like leukemia, prostate, and breast cancer. In babies, nitrates cause “blue baby syndrome” – a lack of oxygen in the blood that can be fatal. One in three low-income Iowans is at risk of exceeding safe levels. I’ve spoken with a nationally recognized MD in hematology who validated this: our cancer crisis isn’t about the common myth that "Iowans just have extra high alcohol consumption" – it’s about what’s in our water.&nbsp;The problemIowa is the only state that has legislatively committed to an exclusively voluntary approach to agricultural pollution. That means CAFO leaks and fertilizer runoff go largely unchecked, especially given the Iowa DNR's compromise under the appointment of Kayla Lyons, a former agribusiness lobbyist. We see that in the 90,000 fish that died in Lizard Creek north of Fort Dodge, a little over a year ago. Corporations like Google target vulnerable communities to build data centers that use millions of gallons of water a day for cooling, drawing from aquifers we don’t even track. Over 300 people, including myself, showed up on Monday to oppose a project in Palo set to build six. They see what we all should: these corporations suck us dry and leave. Even at Kennedy Park outside Fort Dodge, I tested over 50 ppm today during a youth fishing event (hosted by the wonderful group, Youth Empowerment Association), which is one reason our kids don’t swim in local ponds anymore.The solutionWe need frequent, accurate water quality monitoring, funding that has been stripped, and monitoring is often done by our neighbors who volunteer through groups like the Iowa Environmental Council. That’s not an accident, it’s a choice. In 2010, 62% of Iowans voted on a ballot measure to fund water quality efforts. Legislators simply avoided it by never implementing the sales tax tied to it. The first step to fixing a problem is measuring it. The cost of monitoring is negligible compared to the cost of cancer, dead fish, and the loss of our natural resources. What we did We held our first canvassing event on 5/23. It was a tiny but mighty crew, including training some first-time volunteers. I attended Idia&nbsp;May's fundraiser to support another candidate - I'm invested in flipping our state, not just this seat.At 4:30 AM on Tuesday, I helped the Daybreak Rotary Club send off veterans on the Honor Flight. I met with a couple of Fort Dodge leaders to discuss public schools and property taxes. I attended the county party meeting - we went over the new office opening and Frontier Days parade plans. Then, I went to my son's first dance recital at United All Stars last night.Officially at 1,000 doors knocked in Fort Dodge! - Thank you for all the support!The Issues - cost of livingWhen I knock on doors, I constantly hear about the cost of living: housing, healthcare, childcare, property&nbsp;taxes, etc. Different things for different people, but the same squeeze.One woman told me her husband's heart medications cost over $500 a month out of pocket. They're&nbsp;retired, on a fixed income. A nurse, single parent of three, has a medical condition that she and one of her children share. They struggle to afford groceries, but SNAP is out of reach. A target worker returned to work after retirement because the hard work they'd done their whole lives still couldn't cover daily needs.The problemIowa raised the health insurance tax, and the cost is passed directly to consumers. For families already on tight incomes, an extra $50+ a month is crushing. This tax was supposed to draw down federal matching funds, but instead, all the revenue and matching funds go back to the private insurance companies with which we privatized Medicaid and Medicare, because those budgets are in the red.Iowa has above-average healthcare cost increases. Rural hospitals are closing. We have the highest cancer rate in the nation, rank 44th in physicians per capita, and are ranked 51st out of 50 states in OB-GYN care (that includes Costa Rica).The solutionHealthcare is a right, not a luxury. We need to regulate corporate greed. If elected, I will fight to:End the privatization of Medicaid and Medicare. Beyond the 20% of spending that goes to administrative&nbsp;and CEO salaries, we've seen increased denial of coverage - including illegal cases - because fewer covered services directly enrich insurance companies. Reversing privatization would also address the new costs the legislature just added.I'll fight to close the gaps in care. Instead of forcing colleges to accept a set number of Iowa students, we need to focus on bringing providers here. Create loan forgiveness for people working in underserved areas, and create grants like the TEACH Grant to help students afford college and keep medical students in our state. Expand funding for community health centers - including no-cost home visits for preventive care, modeled on programs that actually work.Taking care of Iowans' health shouldn't be a for-profit agenda. For too many Iowans, healthcare has become unaffordable. In recent years, our costs have risen at three times the rate of inflation. The average Iowan now spends over $9,200 annually on care, forcing families to skip vital check-ups and avoid treatment until a minor issue becomes a costly emergency. In total, this broken sysyem costs Iowans an estimate of $30 billion a year.This crisis hits everywhere. We watch rural hospitals and clinics collapse while our state suffers from some of the highest cancer rates in the nation. Our system isn't just broken, it's working exactly as designed: prioritizing insurance company profits over Iowans' health.Kris's Plan: A Common-Sense, Iowa-First SolutionKris will fight to launch a public option. Here's how it works:<ol><li>Cut Out the Costly Middleman: Challenge the insurance corporations that refuse care, by taking Medicaid back to the public, and expand it. We’re organizing, learning, and showing up for the issues that matter—locally and statewide. From city halls to the statehouse, we’re here to make Iowa’s next century more inclusive, equitable, and unapologetically bold.¨</li><li>Attended “Make It OK” mental health event – they spoke about the urgent need for accessible mental health services, including for veterans. We can’t keep treating mental health as an afterthought, and it should be as important as physical health.</li><li>Attended City Council meeting – a provision passed to help cover fire department costs for non‑EMS falls (especially at nursing homes, where insurance expenses for a specific ‘care,’ but just sends first responders). This will help the city budget and ensure fair reimbursement. Also, the city farmers' market starts on June 13 -</li><li>Hosted the 3rd weekly office hour (5/14) - livestream office hour for questions and a behind-the-scenes look at the work of a first-time candidate. We were in Gowrie Parade in the morning with the Webster Democrats and the Otho Parade in the afternoon, followed by my wife and I taking our 3-year-old to his first firework display&nbsp;(he loved it and constantly said "Pop!" as they went off!)</li><li>7/05 - Volunteered at AFES with their pop-up food pantry. AFES was able to serve over 300 neighbors in need, below their average, likely from the holiday weekend.&nbsp;</li><li>7/09 - Field Day in Early, Iowa, with Iowa Organic Association - hearing about how the Nees family leads in sustainable, organic farming practices.</li><li>7/11 - The team helped decorate the Webster County &amp; Iowa Forward Democrat Campaign Office, followed by canvassing.</li><li>7/12 - Kris went to the Liberty and Justice Dinner featuring keynote speaker Pete Buttigieg. Happy Birthday, Rachel!</li></ul>The Issues – Iowans FirstThis week, coming off America's big 250, many people I spoke with at doors and events talked with me about their mixed feelings of patriotism and disappointment.Personally, these feelings go together, as wanting more of the country we call home is the most patriotic we can do. We've seen times in our history where we made strides in culture, science, and democracy. But we've also experienced recent setbacks - and we're capable of seeing where our victories should have gone further for the people left behind.The ProblemWhen I ask people what their biggest concern is - or what keeps them up at night - I often&nbsp;hear one word: "everything". From the news seeing our president defying the law, to an illegal war that is driving up prices, and ICE as a Gestapo - kidnapping anyone, and gunning down without penalty.A state representative can't stop a war in Iran, impeach a president, or order ICE to stand down. But they can use the position to push back, protect constituents, and build a wall of resistance at the state level. State legislatures are increasingly becoming the frontline of defense against federal overreach.The SolutionThe fight for clean water is a fight against corporate polluters and the politicians they buy - whether they’re in Washington or Des Moines. That’s what this campaign is about: making sure the people of Webster County are protected, no matter who’s in the White House.Here's what I can do as your state representative:<ul><li>Pass laws that limit state cooperation with ICE&nbsp;- protect immigrants from being targeted at schools and hospitals, and ensure Iowans have legal recourse if their rights are violated.</li><li>Use the state budget to protect programs that the federal government is gutting - and make sure Iowans know who's responsible.</li><li>Speak out - loudly and publicly -&nbsp;against federal overreach, and I can organize constituents to do the same.&nbsp;We can use the platform that comes from being a legislator to raise up voices.</li><li>Work with other states&nbsp;to build a coordinated resistance.</li></ul>I can't fix everything from Des Moines. But I can make sure Iowa isn't just a bystander while our rights are eroded. Across our country and here in Iowa, we see frequent attacks on fundamental rights: civil rights, bodily autonomy, and freedom of speech. It is past time to stop mere advocacy and take concrete action to protect these rights. One of my biggest critiques of the status quo is the reluctance of officials to stand strong on their beliefs without folding to political convenience; it’s a credibility issue that fails their constituents.I believe in the simple principle: "Your right to swing your fist ends where another person's nose begins." Our laws should protect people from harm, not police feelings.<h5>LGBTQ+ Rights: Love is Love</h5>No one is trying to "turn" anyone else gay. If a husband and wife can share a kiss in public, so can anyone else. Transgender Iowans want the same things we all do: to support their families, access healthcare without financial ruin, and live with respect. They belong in sports consistent with their gender identity; studies show trans women do not have an unfair advantage and are not overrepresented among top athletes. This isn't about biology—it's about dignity.<h5>Women's Rights: Protect Bodily Autonomy</h5>I am pro-choice because it is both the right and the popular position. Every state that has put abortion rights on the ballot has voted to protect them. Yet in Iowa, dangerous laws are causing harm: women are facing permanent damage or even death, we've lost OBGYNs and medical workers, and young families are leaving. Now, online extremists are targeting women's right to vote. We must lock in these protections and not budge an inch.<h5>Immigration Rights: A Path to Dignity</h5>Comprehensive immigration reform (Mass Amnesty) is more popular than mass deportation. Immigrants built this country, but we’ve seen federal agents terrorize communities, even murder, over paperwork. Meanwhile, the process takes decades, and employers who exploit undocumented workers get a slap on the wrist. We need efficient, responsible background checks and a clear path to status. This protects workers from slave wages and strengthens labor rights for everyone. Iowa should become a sanctuary state, ending local collaboration with ICE attacks on our neighbors. As one of the few states not in what the ACLU calls "constitution-free zones," we deserve basic protections, not having people attacked at their homes and place of work.<h5>Labor Rights: Restore Worker Power</h5>Iowa’s so-called "right-to-work" laws are a lie that only protects an employer's right to fire you without cause. Unions are the backbone of the 40-hour work week, weekends, and fair wages. We need stronger protections for unions, easier organizing processes, and strict penalties for companies that break labor laws. It’s time to tip the scales back in favor of workers.When did it become radical to say, "treat others how you want to be treated"? Why is a dignified life under attack by ultra-wealthy corporations? I will fight to defend the rights of all Iowans.

<h4>Canvassing Event </h4>

On March 31st, the Iowa House put on a show. Democrats used Rule 60 to force a vote on multiple bills that had been stalled in committee for months. These weren't obscure measures. They were common-sense policies to:· Raise Iowa's stagnant $7.25 minimum wage· Restore collective bargaining rights for public workers· Crack down on wage theft· Strengthen unemployment protections· Establish paid family leave· Address worker misclassificationThe result was a 92-0 roll-call vote—every member who voted said yes. Every single Republican present voted to bring these bills to the floor for an up-or-down vote. It was a chance for real debate on issues that affect hundreds of thousands of Iowa families.But those "yes" votes were a mirage. The moment the vote was over, Speaker Pat Grassley used his authority to re-refer every single bill back to the same committees that had stalled them. Those committees are effectively done for the year. The bills are dead—killed not by a recorded vote against working Iowans, but by a procedural trick to save face and appease corporate donors.My opponent, Rep. Ann Meyer, voted "yes" on the discharge to look good, then stood silently as their leader buried the bills. She chose a procedural trick over a real vote. Her campaign donors include Walmart—a corporation that has fought for years against workers’ rights and wages—along with hundreds of thousands from other corporate PACs. Iowa's childcare system is broken and unaffordable. This crisis isn't just a family issue or a harsh critique of "pro-life" politicians. It is an economic emergency that is pushing parents out of the workforce, and the limited options add to the reasons young families leave their home state. The Problem: An Unaffordable System That Fails Families &amp; Our EconomyDevestating Costs: Full-time childcare now rivals a mortgage payment for Iowa families, costing more than $10,000 a year per child on average. This forces impossible choices between a paycheck and staying home to care for your kids.Workforce Collapse: Parents, especially mothers, are being forced to leave their jobs or reduce hours because they cannot find or afford quality care. This shrinks our workforce, hurts local businesses, and drags down our economy. Inaccessible &amp; Patchwork System: Iowa's free preschool Program for 4-year-olds is starting, but it covers only about 10 hours a week and leaves out infants, toddlers, and the wraparound care working parents need. At best, many families have one parent work overnight, the other during the day, juggling the kids at the cost of quality of life as a family. For many rural and low-income families, options simply don't exist.Underpaid Educators: The dedicated professionals who care for and educate our youngest Iowans are paid poverty wages, leading to high turnover and program instability. The Kris Williams Solution: Universal Childcare as Public NecessityAs a dad who understands the struggle of balancing work and family, I believe childcare is a public good. It is essential infrastructure for a thriving economy, just like roads or schools. Guarantee Affordable, High-Quality Care for Every Family: We will build on Iowa's existing preschool framework to create a truly universal system. We cut the private school voucher scam, and fund a sliding-scale subsidy to cap family costs, expanded hours to match work schedules, and inclusion of all children from infancy through school age.Invest in Our Childcare Workforce: We must value educators by providing pathways for professional wages, benefits, and training. This investment would ensure stable, high-quality care for our children and create dignified jobs that keep people and families in our communities. Studies show early education isthe key to academic success, boosting our state back to the education superpower it once was.Boost Economic Growth &amp; Workforce Participation: Universal childcare is a powerful tool to boost the skill level and size of our workforce. It enables parents, particularly mothers, to participate fully, boosts local business productivity, and attracts and retains young families in Iowa, reversing the "brain drain."Affordable, reliable childcare isn't a luxury; it is fundemental to family security, economic mobility, and Iowa's future. We will fight to make it a reality for every working family.
