Last week was a little crazy - an immediate family member ended up in the ER and ICU for 5 days. They are home now, but that is why I missed sending out last week’s email. Here’s what we’ve been up to.&nbsp;What got done:<ul><li>New endorsement (official announcement comes Tuesday 5/5) - I’ll be adding their logo to our lit and website.</li><li>Met with Run For Something Regional Director - Continuing coalition building with an organization dedicated to getting a new generation of young leaders into office. &nbsp;</li><li>Knocked 37 more doors in Fort Dodge (Precinct 4) - more to come this weekend!</li><li>Next Century Forum Progressive Candidate Forum (4/22) - Zoom forum with Rachel Burns (HD-7), Idia May (HD-58), Adam Peters (HD-97), Matt Robinson (HD-72), Amy Tagliareni (HD-42), and Grace Van Cleave (SD-17). Great conversations, audience questions, and building the network of people who are going to change Iowa.</li><li>Community Homeless Convo (4/23) - attended a local meeting to help meet the needs of people experiencing homelessness. Lots of work to be done. Big takeaway: we need more resources to support people who are suffering. Once in office, fighting for people over profit will directly impact these issues - creating affordable housing, lowering grocery costs, funding higher education, and social services to help get people back on their feet.</li><li>Meeting with Scale to Win - Met with this vendor that supports connecting with disenfranchised voters and small dollar donors.</li><li>Started Soccer Coaching (4/30) - serving the community as 2-3 year old soccer coach. Focusing on fun, motor skills, and building kids’ confidence! What we didWe protested 6 AI data centers in Palo, Iowa, on 6/1. We won the Democratic Primary on 6/2 – officially the first nominee in 8 years. We met with and were endorsed by Senator Daryl Beall (retired). We marched in the Frontier Days Parade with the county party and other local candidates on 6/6, and also attended Frontier Days down at the Fort.The Issues – water qualityThis week, the most common concern I heard was about water quality, and it's one of the main reasons I’m running. The EPA suggests a nitrate threshold of 10 parts per million (ppm) or less. However, studies show even 5 ppm is linked to higher cancer risks, especially blood-related cancers like leukemia, prostate, and breast cancer. In babies, nitrates cause “blue baby syndrome” – a lack of oxygen in the blood that can be fatal. One in three low-income Iowans is at risk of exceeding safe levels. I’ve spoken with a nationally recognized MD in hematology who validated this: our cancer crisis isn’t about the common myth that "Iowans just have extra high alcohol consumption" – it’s about what’s in our water.&nbsp;The problemIowa is the only state that has legislatively committed to an exclusively voluntary approach to agricultural pollution. That means CAFO leaks and fertilizer runoff go largely unchecked, especially given the Iowa DNR's compromise under the appointment of Kayla Lyons, a former agribusiness lobbyist. We see that in the 90,000 fish that died in Lizard Creek north of Fort Dodge, a little over a year ago. Corporations like Google target vulnerable communities to build data centers that use millions of gallons of water a day for cooling, drawing from aquifers we don’t even track. Over 300 people, including myself, showed up on Monday to oppose a project in Palo set to build six. They see what we all should: these corporations suck us dry and leave. Even at Kennedy Park outside Fort Dodge, I tested over 50 ppm today during a youth fishing event (hosted by the wonderful group, Youth Empowerment Association), which is one reason our kids don’t swim in local ponds anymore.The solutionWe need frequent, accurate water quality monitoring, funding that has been stripped, and monitoring is often done by our neighbors who volunteer through groups like the Iowa Environmental Council. The first step to fixing a problem is measuring it. The cost of monitoring is negligible compared to the cost of cancer, dead fish, and the loss of our natural resources. Weekly update #9 Water Quality

What we did We held our first canvassing event on 5/23. It was a tiny but mighty crew, including training some first-time volunteers. I attended Idia&nbsp;May's fundraiser to support another candidate - I'm invested in flipping our state, not just this seat.At 4:30 AM on Tuesday, I helped the Daybreak Rotary Club send off veterans on the Honor Flight. I met with a couple of Fort Dodge leaders to discuss public schools and property taxes. I attended the county party meeting - we went over the new office opening and Frontier Days parade plans. Then, I went to my son's first dance recital at United All Stars last night.Officially at 1,000 doors knocked in Fort Dodge! - Thank you for all the support!The Issues - cost of livingWhen I knock on doors, I constantly hear about the cost of living: housing, healthcare, childcare, property&nbsp;taxes, etc. Different things for different people, but the same squeeze.One woman told me her husband's heart medications cost over $500 a month out of pocket. They're&nbsp;retired, on a fixed income. A nurse, single parent of three, has a medical condition that she and one of her children share. They struggle to afford groceries, but SNAP is out of reach. A target worker returned to work after retirement because the hard work they'd done their whole lives still couldn't cover daily needs.The problemIowa raised the health insurance tax, and the cost is passed directly to consumers. For families already on tight incomes, an extra $50+ a month is crushing. This tax was supposed to draw down federal matching funds, but instead, all the revenue and matching funds go back to the private insurance companies with which we privatized Medicaid and Medicare, because those budgets are in the red.Iowa has above-average healthcare cost increases. Rural hospitals are closing. We have the highest cancer rate in the nation, rank 44th in physicians per capita, and are ranked 51st out of 50 states in OB-GYN care (that includes Costa Rica).The solutionHealthcare is a right, not a luxury. We need to regulate corporate greed. If elected, I will fight to:End the privatization of Medicaid and Medicare. Beyond the 20% of spending that goes to administrative&nbsp;and CEO salaries, we've seen increased denial of coverage - including illegal cases - because fewer covered services directly enrich insurance companies. Reversing privatization would also address the new costs the legislature just added.I'll fight to close the gaps in care. Instead of forcing colleges to accept a set number of Iowa students, we need to focus on bringing providers here. Create loan forgiveness for people working in underserved areas, and create grants like the TEACH Grant to help students afford college and keep medical students in our state. Expand funding for community health centers - including no-cost home visits for preventive care, modeled on programs that actually work.Taking care of Iowans' health shouldn't be a for-profit agenda. For too many Iowans, healthcare has become unaffordable. In recent years, our costs have risen at three times the rate of inflation. The average Iowan now spends over $9,200 annually on care, forcing families to skip vital check-ups and avoid treatment until a minor issue becomes a costly emergency. In total, this broken sysyem costs Iowans an estimate of $30 billion a year.This crisis hits everywhere. We watch rural hospitals and clinics collapse while our state suffers from some of the highest cancer rates in the nation. Our system isn't just broken, it's working exactly as designed: prioritizing insurance company profits over Iowans' health.Kris's Plan: A Common-Sense, Iowa-First SolutionKris will fight to launch a public option. Here's how it works:<ol><li>Cut Out the Costly Middleman: Challenge the insurance corporations that refuse care, by taking Medicaid back to the public, and expand it. From city halls to the statehouse, we’re here to make Iowa’s next century more inclusive, equitable, and unapologetically bold.¨</li><li>Attended “Make It OK” mental health event – they spoke about the urgent need for accessible mental health services, including for veterans. We can’t keep treating mental health as an afterthought, and it should be as important as physical health.</li><li>Attended City Council meeting – a provision passed to help cover fire department costs for non‑EMS falls (especially at nursing homes, where insurance expenses for a specific ‘care,’ but just sends first responders). This will help the city budget and ensure fair reimbursement. Also, the city farmers' market starts on June 13 -</li><li>Hosted the 3rd weekly office hour (5/14) - livestream office hour for questions and a behind-the-scenes look at the work of a first-time candidate. Across our country and here in Iowa, we see frequent attacks on fundamental rights: civil rights, bodily autonomy, and freedom of speech. It is past time to stop mere advocacy and take concrete action to protect these rights. One of my biggest critiques of the status quo is the reluctance of officials to stand strong on their beliefs without folding to political convenience; it’s a credibility issue that fails their constituents.I believe in the simple principle: "Your right to swing your fist ends where another person's nose begins." Our laws should protect people from harm, not police feelings.<h4>LGBTQ+ Rights: Love is Love</h4>No one is trying to "turn" anyone else gay. If a husband and wife can share a kiss in public, so can anyone else. Transgender Iowans want the same things we all do: to support their families, access healthcare without financial ruin, and live with respect. They belong in sports consistent with their gender identity; studies show trans women do not have an unfair advantage and are not overrepresented among top athletes. This isn't about biology—it's about dignity.<h4>Women's Rights: Protect Bodily Autonomy</h4>I am pro-choice because it is both the right and the popular position. Every state that has put abortion rights on the ballot has voted to protect them. Yet in Iowa, dangerous laws are causing harm: women are facing permanent damage or even death, we've lost OBGYNs and medical workers, and young families are leaving. Now, online extremists are targeting women's right to vote. We must lock in these protections and not budge an inch.<h4>Immigration Rights: A Path to Dignity</h4>Comprehensive immigration reform (Mass Amnesty) is more popular than mass deportation. Immigrants built this country, but we’ve seen federal agents terrorize communities, even murder, over paperwork. Meanwhile, the process takes decades, and employers who exploit undocumented workers get a slap on the wrist. We need efficient, responsible background checks and a clear path to status. This protects workers from slave wages and strengthens labor rights for everyone. Iowa should become a sanctuary state, ending local collaboration with ICE attacks on our neighbors. As one of the few states not in what the ACLU calls "constitution-free zones," we deserve basic protections, not having people attacked at their homes and place of work.<h4>Labor Rights: Restore Worker Power</h4>Iowa’s so-called "right-to-work" laws are a lie that only protects an employer's right to fire you without cause. Unions are the backbone of the 40-hour work week, weekends, and fair wages. We need stronger protections for unions, easier organizing processes, and strict penalties for companies that break labor laws. It’s time to tip the scales back in favor of workers.When did it become radical to say, "treat others how you want to be treated"? Why is a dignified life under attack by ultra-wealthy corporations? I will fight to defend the rights of all Iowans.

Canvassing Event

On March 31st, the Iowa House put on a show. Democrats used Rule 60 to force a vote on multiple bills that had been stalled in committee for months. These weren't obscure measures. They were common-sense policies to:· Raise Iowa's stagnant $7.25 minimum wage· Restore collective bargaining rights for public workers· Crack down on wage theft· Strengthen unemployment protections· Establish paid family leave· Address worker misclassificationThe result was a 92-0 roll-call vote—every member who voted said yes. Every single Republican present voted to bring these bills to the floor for an up-or-down vote. It was a chance for real debate on issues that affect hundreds of thousands of Iowa families.But those "yes" votes were a mirage. The moment the vote was over, Speaker Pat Grassley used his authority to re-refer every single bill back to the same committees that had stalled them. Those committees are effectively done for the year. The bills are dead—killed not by a recorded vote against working Iowans, but by a procedural trick to save face and appease corporate donors.My opponent, Rep. Ann Meyer, voted "yes" on the discharge to look good, then stood silently as their leader buried the bills. She chose a procedural trick over a real vote. Her campaign donors include Walmart—a corporation that has fought for years against workers’ rights and wages—along with hundreds of thousands from other corporate PACs. This shrinks our workforce, hurts local businesses, and drags down our economy. Inaccessible &amp; Patchwork System: Iowa's free preschool Program for 4-year-olds is starting, but it covers only about 10 hours a week and leaves out infants, toddlers, and the wraparound care working parents need. At best, many families have one parent work overnight, the other during the day, juggling the kids at the cost of quality of life as a family. For many rural and low-income families, options simply don't exist.Underpaid Educators: The dedicated professionals who care for and educate our youngest Iowans are paid poverty wages, leading to high turnover and program instability. The Kris Williams Solution: Universal Childcare as Public NecessityAs a dad who understands the struggle of balancing work and family, I believe childcare is a public good. It is essential infrastructure for a thriving economy, just like roads or schools. Guarantee Affordable, High-Quality Care for Every Family: We will build on Iowa's existing preschool framework to create a truly universal system. We cut the private school voucher scam, and fund a sliding-scale subsidy to cap family costs, expanded hours to match work schedules, and inclusion of all children from infancy through school age.Invest in Our Childcare Workforce: We must value educators by providing pathways for professional wages, benefits, and training. This investment would ensure stable, high-quality care for our children and create dignified jobs that keep people and families in our communities. Studies show early education isthe key to academic success, boosting our state back to the education superpower it once was.Boost Economic Growth &amp; Workforce Participation: Universal childcare is a powerful tool to boost the skill level and size of our workforce. It enables parents, particularly mothers, to participate fully, boosts local business productivity, and attracts and retains young families in Iowa, reversing the "brain drain."Affordable, reliable childcare isn't a luxury; it is fundemental to family security, economic mobility, and Iowa's future. We will fight to make it a reality for every working family.

What we didWe went to Manning, Iowa, and met the newly picked Lieutenant Governor candidate, Dave Muhlbauer. Also, we got over to the Iowa Food System Coalition: 2026 Farm and Food Conference. Where they celebrated people making amazing impacts in getting fresh local food to children and their families, also giving educational sessions on sustainable farming practices.The Issues – “Woke Trans Agenda”As the primary and convention wrap up, candidates look towards November. Fear of labels like "Woke Trans Agenda" and reactive politics are leaving voters concerned, and the couch looking like a better choice. Again.Pride is as important now as ever. As people fight back against wrongs in the world, we must remember the words of Marsha P. Johnson: "You never completely have your rights, one person, until you all have your rights." Your freedom is at risk if anyone's is.&nbsp;&nbsp;The problemAt both the national and state levels, elected officials have been looking for ways to court enough voters to win their upcoming elections. In the desperate attempt to win over the “moderate” Republicans, they have chosen to push the line of “keeping boys out of girls' sports.” Even people who claim to be fact-driven ignore that in 2024, the NCAA President testified that fewer than ten transgender athletes were a part of the half-million student athletes. If the reasoning is to protect our children, this culture war attack forgets that nearly all public school students are required to be in some sort of PE or athletics - especially in Iowa, where recent legislation just mandated it every day in elementary school.&nbsp;As I’m sure you all remember from grade school, there was always someone a head taller than the rest of the class, a preteen with a mustache, or someone light as a feather, regardless of devouring an entire pizza. These bans often have no logical carryout plan, leading to parents (often the parent being the sore loser) demanding a child drop their pants in front of an audience. Those obsessed with the issue would do well to educate themselves. Most affirmative care for children is simply therapy as they sort through new experiences.&nbsp; Instead of targeting trans kids, we could organize sports by measurable statistics like weight and skill level - anyone can have a natural advantage. In our awkward youth of changing bodies and socializing with different people, adults adding to the bullying seems profoundly unproductive.&nbsp;The solutionAddressing the real issues that affect all children, young athletes, and adults is the correct answer. Our children can’t learn, compete, or succeed when they’re going hungry, when the adults in their lives can’t afford to show up because they have to work multiple jobs. Elected officials should spend their time solving real problems - like access to affordable healthcare.&nbsp;Pride is as important now as it ever was. Don’t relent or accept the terms of those greedy for political power. We are all part of the working class. If we decide to leave anyone behind, we can expect that to be the place we will be pushed back to. Be greedier - demand more for yourself and your neighbor.Hamilton, B. R., et al. (2024). Kris believes a quality public education is the foundation of a strong community and a fair shot for every child. Yet, while Iowa once led the nation, our schools have fallen to the middle of the pack and continue to slip. Today, only 52% of our elementary students are reading at grade level. We cannot accept this decline.The core problem is clear: our commitment has wavered. Public funds are being diverted from our neighborhood schools, harming the education of the vast majority of Iowa's children. Kris will fight to refocus our priorities on the public good.<h3>Kris's Plan: Putting Public Schools and Iowa Families First</h3>Kris will champion a multi-pronged approach to restore Iowa's educational leadership and support working families.<ol><li>Fully Invest in Our Public Schools: Kris will ensure our public schools have the resources they need: strong after-school programs, mental health counselors, nurses, and smaller class sizes. He will integrate student voices into decisions that affect their education and fully supports embedding the ISEA Bill of Teacher Rights in the state constitution.</li><li>End the Private School Voucher Drain: Kris will fight to end the voucher program that funnels public dollars to private, for-profit institutions. Public money should fund the public good—not schools that can discriminate and widen the gap between "the haves" and "the have-nots."</li><li>Expand Learning from Preschool Through Career: To build lifelong success, Kris will:<ul><li>Invest in Early Childhood: Expand Iowa's successful preschool program to more children and families, providing the critical foundation all students deserve.</li><li>Guarantee Affordable Pathways: Ensure every Iowan has access to affordable community college and workforce training to build skills for high-demand careers.</li><li>Strengthen High School Opportunity: Expand career-based education in high schools, creating multiple pathways to success.</li></ul></li></ol>Great schools are a great tool to end Iowa's "brain drain," attract new families, and build an economy that works for everyone. Iowa's economy is rigged. For decades, the promise has been that tax cuts for the wealthy and deregulation for corporations would create prosperity for all. This "trickle-down" theory has failed. The result is a broken social contract where CEOs now make 300 times what their workers earn, while families struggle with the high cost of housing, energy, and transportation. It's time to build an economy that puts people over profit.The Problem: A System Skewed Toward Corporate Power<ul><li>Starvation Wages &amp; Soaring CEO Pay: Iowa's minimum wage is frozen at $7.25—a starvation wage. While neighboring states move toward $15, studies show a true Iowa living wage is now near $20/hour. Meanwhile, executive pay has exploded, extracting wealth from our communities.</li><li>Unaffordable Housing &amp; Corporate Landlords: Families are squeezed by rising rents and housing costs. The logic of the market, focused solely on profit, fails to provide stable, affordable homes for our elderly, young families, and low-income Iowans.</li><li>Corporate Monopolies &amp; Stranded Communities: From energy giants like MidAmerican to retail chains like Dollar General, large corporations use their power to crush small businesses and trap consumers with high prices and limited choices. This has devastated main streets and left rural Iowans with fewer essential services.</li><li>A Rigged Tax System: Iowa politicians have slashed corporate taxes, with rates set to fall to 5% by 2028. The promised "good-paying jobs and philanthropy" have not materialized. Instead, it's a giveaway that forces working families to shoulder the burden through higher property and sales taxes.</li><li>Inadequate &amp; Unsafe Infrastructure: The lack of reliable, affordable public transportation, especially in rural areas, isolates residents, burdens families with multiple car payments, forces our elderly to drive on dangerous winter roads, and holds back our economy.</li></ul>The Kris Williams Solution: An Iowa that Works for WorkersI believe the economy should serve people, not the other way around. Here is my plan to rebalance power, lower costs, and rebuild prosperity from the ground up.<ol><li>Guarantee a Living Wage &amp; Tax Extreme Wealth: Raise Iowa's minimum wage to a true living wage, starting with a push to $20/hour. Simultaneously, we will reform our tax code to make ultra-wealthy individuals and corporations pay their fair share, reversing the failed trickle-down experiment.</li><li>Launch a Public Housing Initiative: Use state resources to convert abandoned buildings into quality, affordable public housing. We will guarantee units for vulnerable populations like the elderly and young families, with the rest available first-come, first-serve. This reduces market pressure, protects community home values, and ensures housing is a right, not a luxury.</li><li>Break Monopolies &amp; Protect Main Street: Create publicly owned utility options to provide low-cost, clean energy and break the stranglehold of private monopolies. We will enact strict antitrust enforcement and support policies to protect consumers and small "mom-and-pop" businesses from predatory corporate practices.</li><li>Invest in Public, Statewide Transportation: Build a 21st-century transportation network that includes expanding rural rail and bus services. This will connect towns to jobs and healthcare, provide safe alternatives to winter driving, and cut the poverty tax of car ownership.</li></ol>The choice is clear: continue a system designed for corporate greed, or fight for one built on the dignity of work. I choose people over profit. We will build an Iowa where hard work is rewarded, families can afford to thrive, and communities—not corporations—come first.

For too long, the promise of the free market has been broken for working families. In sector after sector, and handful of powerful corporations have created functional monopolies, leaving us with no real choice. The result - soaring costs for groceries, utilities, and housing, while wages stagnate. They prioritize profits over our people. It's time to flip the script.

They’ve already helped elect over 1,400 candidates across the country, and now their grassroots army and experience is standing with us in IA-HD08.&nbsp;</li><li><a href="https://pdamerica.org/chapters/#IA" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Iowa Progressive Democrats of America </a>(PDA Iowa) -the grassroots arm of the progressive movement – fighting for Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, worker rights, and getting big money out of politics. They don't endorse establishment-backed candidates who take corporate PAC money.&nbsp;</li><li>We also received the 2026 Moms Demand Action Gun Sense Candidate distinction. Kris Williams holds to a strong commitment to common-sense gun safety.&nbsp;</li></ul></li></ul><ul><li>Attended District 4 Caucus (5/2) - Kris went as a delegate and served on the platform committee. He was nominated for the State Central Committee and State Platform Committee. Unfortunately, he was not selected for the Central Committee, and he is waiting to hear the Platform Committee results. He spoke with other delegates who care about clean water, fair taxes, and putting people over profit. There was positivity surrounding the points Kris made about party change and serving working people.&nbsp;</li><li>Attended the Rob Sand strategy session (5/6) - It was exciting to see the large turnout of folks excited about Sand for governor. We discussed future opportunities for coordinated campaigns and heard about Sand's strategy moving forward in his campaign.&nbsp;</li><li>Hosted the second weekly office hour (5/7) - livestream office hour for questions and a behind-the-scenes look at the work of a first-time candidate. Will be weekly on Thursdays, 7-8 PM. One week down. Here’s what happened.What got done:<ul><li>Iowa AFL-CIO endorsed us. Huge. I’ll be adding their logo to our lit and website.</li><li>On Tha Ground Foundation endorsed us. Great momentum, continuing to work on building a broad coalition.</li><li>Met with Rachel - she’s a Spanish teacher at FDSH and will be our part-time campaign manager, starting slowly while finishing the school year.</li><li>Knocked 72 doors in Fort Dodge - (Precinct 11) (ahead of goal - will definitely hit the 100 by the end of the weekend)&nbsp;</li><li>Met with Charles Clayton - community leader, the head of AFES, and the 2020 candidate for this seat. He shared his experience running against our incumbent and gave me thoughtful advice on how to reach voters and being a first-time candidate. He plans to introduce Rachel and me to a few people.</li><li>Recorded 2 videos for social media</li><li>Made progress on securing office space for the party - we’ll use it as a volunteer/canvassing/event staging area, and also as a mutual aid site. We can impact our community even before taking office, and it’s a great way to engage with the community!</li><li>Townhall event with Ashley WolfTornabane (Congress District 4) and Rachel Burns (House District 7) went great! Weekly update #2

Iowa's water quality efforts rely on a voluntary, incentive-based framework. This system has failed. We see the consequences in significant runoff from industrial-scale agriculture, where corporate profits are prioritized over our shared resources.The Problem: Profit Over Public Health:Industrial Agriculture &amp; Runoff: Driven by subsidies for ethanol and taxpayer-backed crop insurance, corporate farming practices lead to soil degradation. This creates a harmful cycle that requires more fertilizer, which in turn worsens chemical and nutrient runoff into our rivers and drinking water.CAFO Contamination: Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) generate massive amounts of waste, having "chickenized" large quantities of livestock. Manure is harvested from these sites and sprayed on to nutrient depleted land, creating a destructive feedback loop that incentivizes more corn production, more fertilizer, and more runoff into our water resources. Leaks and runoff from CAFOs put dangerous levels of nitrogen into our water, contributing to serious public health risks, including higher cancer rates.Additional Threats: Iowa's coal plants and the proposed data centers present further risks, from coal runoff to the immense water demands for cooling systems, which threaten both water quality and supply.The Kris Williams Solution: Accountability &amp; Sustainable ActionAs someone with a degree in Sustainability, I know that ignoring a problem does not solve it. We must increase water quality monitoring and transition to proven solutions.End the Voluntary Approach: We need enforceable regulations and penalties, including meaningful fines, for polluters who violate the public trust for private gain. End the process of "socialized risks with privatized gains".Invest in Sustainable Agriculture: We will actively support farmers who adopt soil-health practices like food-based crop rotations and cover crops, which dramatically reduce runoff. This transition also brings broad benefits: lower grocery prices, economic self-reliance against federal tariff wars, reduced food imports, and new jobs in diversified manufacturing. This keeps Iowa dollars here.
