True Democracy

in Iowa, we believe in common sense. And right now, a common-sense look at our country shows something is broken. We have a system where giant corporations and a handful of billionaires can buy elections and influence politicians, while the rest of us are left to shout from the sidelines. Our voices are drowned out by big money.

That’s not a real democracy. That’s an auction.

True democracy means the people have the power, not just to vote, but to have a real say in the forces that shape our lives: our jobs, our healthcare, our land, and our economy. It’s about building a society where the wealth we all create together works for all of us, not just for those at the top.

The Problem: Our Voices Are Being Drowned Out

  • Big Money in Politics: Campaigns are funded by wealthy donors and corporate PACs, so it’s their interests: (tax breaks for the rich, deregulation for polluters) that get heard in Des Moines and Washington. Our needs, like protecting family farms and saving rural hospitals, get put on the back burner.

  • An Economy That Works for the Few: For decades, the productivity of Iowa’s workers, on the factory floor and in the fields, has gone up! But the rewards have all flowed to shareholders and CEOs, while our wages have stayed flat. We’re working harder than ever but falling further behind.

  • No Real Say on the Job: Most of us spend the majority of our waking hours at work, yet we have little to no say in the decisions that affect our safety, our schedules, and our dignity.

This isn't the Iowa value of "neighbors helping neighbors." This is a system designed to help the powerful.

Our Vision: An Economy and a Democracy Run By and For Working People

We need to extend the idea of democracy beyond the voting booth and into our daily economic lives. It’s about making sure that the wealth we create with our hands, and our minds benefits our communities, not just distant corporate headquarters.

Here’s what that looks like here in Iowa:

  • A Government That Works for Us, Not Them:

    • Get Big Money Out: I’ll fight for public financing of campaigns, so politicians are accountable to voters, not corporate donors.

    • Protect and Expand Voting Rights: Make it easier, not harder, for every Iowan to vote, with automatic voter registration and expanded early voting.

  • Worker Power and a Fair Share:

    • Protect the Right to Unionize: Make it easier for workers to form a union so we can collectively bargain for better wages, benefits, and safer working conditions. When unions are strong, all workers benefit.

    • Worker Cooperatives: We’ll provide state support for employees to own their businesses. Imagine a factory or a local grocery store owned and run by the people who work there, keeping the profits right here in our community.

  • Public Wealth for Public Good:

    • Invest in Ourselves: Instead of giving massive tax breaks to out-of-state corporations, let’s use our public resources to build the things we all need - like affordable housing, a state-owned public option for broadband, and renewable energy projects that create jobs and lower costs.

    • Keep Our Land and Wealth in Our Hands: Support policies that help family farmers, not giant agribusiness corporations, and protect our land from being exploited for short-term corporate gain.

Our Commitment

As your representative, I will be a voice for this common-sense vision of democracy. I will fight for:

  1. Campaign Finance Reform to end the dominance of corporate PAC money in our state politics.

  2. Laws that Make it Easier to Unionize, because no one should have to risk their job to demand a fair wage.

  3. Policies that Support Employee Ownership, helping to build an economy where working Iowans can build wealth and stability.

This is about building an Iowa where everyone who works hard can build a good life. It’s about creating a true democracy of, by, and for the people.
